The past few months have been very active at the Chasam Sopher Synagogue. If you came to services, for a tour, or to one of our programs, we are glad you did and hope you will join us again. If you have never been to the Chasam Sopher Synagogue, please stop by the next time you are on the Lower East Side!!
This year we again enjoyed a hosting a large crowd at our High Holiday Services. As has been the case for many years, thanks to Hank Sopher's generosity, there was no charge for tickets or seats. We have begun hosting frequent Mommy & Me Challah baking classes for the young women of the community, which have become an instant success! Baker extraordinaire Malkie Jacob explained
the culinary and ritual aspects of this mitzvah, while the children got their hands dirty in a different way - playing outside in the beautiful garden. During Chol Hamoed Succos we fired up the grill once again for a delicious and well attended barbeque and celebration. We enjoyed having an eclectic mix of people, young and old, married and single. It was a particular joy to welcome many of the young couples who are involved with the synagogue and their children.
For our annual concert this year we enthusiastically welcomed Chaim Dovid for the first time to the Chasam Sopher Synagogue. Chaim Dovid is a world renowned performer who lives in the Old City of Jerusalem. The crowd became so boisterous at one point that the men needed to go out to the garden to find more room to dance. A wonderful time was had by all.
On January 18, 2009 history was made at the Chasam Sopher Synagogue as "The Three Young Cantors;" Yanky Lemmer, Zevy Muller and Azi Schwartz performed together for the first time. A crowd of several hundred people were in attendance in our upstairs sanctuary. It is believed that these young chazzanim represent the future of Cantorial Art in America - and the enthusiastic audience certainly enjoyed hearing them in such a beautiful setting with wonderful acoustics.
Since the completion of our renovations and the installation of our beautiful garden, the shul is constantly being used for happy occasions such as brissim, weddings and bar mitzvahs. Why not join our mailing list and keep up to date on what is happening at the Chasam Sopher Synagogue? Or better yet, drop by so we can greet you personally. |
